Today’s soap project is perfect for a beginner as the design is simple but you still end up with an interesting bar of soap. With melt and pour there is also no lye to deal with as the actual soap base has already been made adding to the beginner friendly element of this soap recipe.
For this project we are going to be making an Oatmeal & Honey soap scented with Anise and Peppermint essential oils. The oatmeal soap base is very soothing to the skin & honey is also great for your skin as it has antioxidant properties and is also a humectant, meaning it draws moisture to your skin. The spicy licorice scent of the Anise with the invigorating aroma of Peppermint gives this soap a warm, uplifting aroma. I use two different types of melt and pour base in this soap to change the color up but you can defintiely just use the oatmeal melt and pour base for a more simplified look
For this recipe you will need:
16oz Oatmeal Melt and Pour Soap Base(or add colloidal oats to a white soap base)
1tsp of Honey
Rolled or Quick Oats
To Make:
Measure out your Oatmeal Melt & Pour Soap Base & Your Clear Melt & Pour Soap Base into two seperate microwave safe containers. Heat until completely melted. I would melt the oatmeal base first as it will take longer since it is the larger quantity of the two bases.
While your bases are melting, sprinkle a few rolled or quick oats into the bottom of your silicone molds for a textural element and a little additional interest on your soap. I sprayed the mold cavities with isopropyl alcohol before putting the oats in to help them stay in place.
Once your soap bases are melted add in your essential oils. 3/4 of your essential oil blend should go into the Oatmeal Base with the remaining 1/4 going in the clear base. Stir to combine.
Next place 1tsp of honey into about a tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol and heat for around 10 seconds. This helps the honey distribute better throughout the soap base. Next, Add in your brown soap colorant( I used Bronze Brown mica from Nurture Soap) and stir the mixture to combine. Once combined pour into your clear soap base and stir.
Now pour your soap bases into your mold. There are a few options on how you can do this. I poured my oatmeal base in and then poured the brown base in the middle for a color block effect. You could also pour the brown in a swirled pattern or use a popsicle or chopstick to swirl it once the soap is in the mold. The different base types help keep your colors separated in the soap.
Next allow your soap to cool 4-6 hours before unmolding.
Remove the soap from the mold and it is ready to use. I suggest shrink wrapping your soap until you are ready to use it. Melt and pour soap bases draw moisture to them due to their glycerin content and if left exposed to the air and can form little beads of moisture on top of your soap. The soap is still usable if this happens but it won’t look as nice and will become sticky from the moisture .
